What Makes Peugeot a Good Car Brand To Buy?

If you are a motorist, the chances are that you are used to seeing more makes of car on the road than others, and perhaps you have even taken a moment to wonder what makes certain brands more popular than others. Generally speaking, the most popular car makes sold in the UK are as follows, in order of popularity:

  • Ford
  • Vauxhall
  • Volkswagen
  • BMW
  • Audi
  • Toyota
  • Nissan
  • Mercedes
  • Peugeot
  • Renault

Some of these are a little surprising, especially when you consider how high up the list the more luxury class of cars are placed, such as Audi, BMW and Mercedes. These car makes were once thought of as aspirational and therefore tended to be driven by higher net worth individuals.

Times have changed, and with finance plans becoming more popular, luxury cars are more attainable for a larger section of the population. While these cars are still considered very nice to have, they are not quite the status symbol that they once were.

While the makes listed above are the 10 most popular car brands in the UK, we feel that there is one on this list that is still underappreciated, and often underestimated in terms of the quality of the cars they produce.

Peugeot is a car manufacturer that consistently places in the top 10 car makes sold in the UK. While they may not be the cars that instantly come to mind when you think about top brands, Peugeot have managed to cultivate a lasting reputation for quality and style, without being unrealistically priced.

Choosing between new and used Peugeots

If you are in the market for a car, the first question you are likely to ask yourself is whether you will be focusing on finding a new or used car. There are certainly benefits to both, so it’s well worth spending some time to think about your options in this regard. Many people love the idea of driving a brand new car that is fresh off the manufacturing floor, but choosing a brand new car does come with a much higher cost.

Depreciation is a particular issue with new cars, as their value tends to plummet by about 30% in their first couple of years. The vast majority of new cars will lose thousands of pounds from their value in this time frame, meaning that if you come to sell the car after a couple of years you will be making a considerable loss on the cars ‘new’ price.

Used cars that are only 3 or 4 years old will have already experienced their most rapid depreciation and so will be available at several thousands pounds cheaper than their brand new counterparts. For example, you can get a high quality Peugeot used car such as a Peugeot 2008 for around £8,000 whereas the same car would cost around £20,000.

If you are someone who simply must have a brand new car then the chances are that you are willing to accept the depreciation they are associated with in exchange for the prestige of owning something brand new. If this sounds like you then you are unlikely to be satisfied with a second hand model.

Having said this, it can still be well worth looking into used Peugeots in your area especially if you manage to find one that is only a year or two old and has low mileage. If you can source something like this then you are unlikely to notice much of a difference between it and a brand new Peugeot.
